This is a review for Fathom, the prequel to Derelict. As everyone has noted the sound design is wonderfully atmospheric. The echoing booms of eddies against the station walls and the clang of machinery. You feel like you're right there with 19,000 feet of water waiting to crush you.I love a good competence porn story. Give me an unraveling disaster and a character with brains and gumption sifting through and discarding solutions, and I lap it up. The reward is not in characters being automatically right, but in being able to follow their thought processes. Especially, when something goes awry and they have to correct on the fly. How are they going to get out of this situation? I had my heart in my throat at moments wondering if the characters would survive because the show sets up scenarios where the odds seem so slim. But the writers do the work of explaining how and why one can survive, so that it turns dumb luck into smart luck.
basically everything i love in a show. underwater mystery . fucked up and weird alien things. an artificial intelligence saying things that make u lean forward in ur seat and go "hang on a second...". weird scifi tech. women. it's got it all.... 10/10
Wow. This show is... intense. Maybe don't listen if you've got a fear of water, yeah? But for the rest of us, this is non-stop action that keeps delivering, with a rich soundscape that will leave you breathless.
I usually am not super into high-action thrillers in audio format, because it so often doesn't translate well (& too often they are all style with little substance I've found). This show, however, does an excellent job! they somehow managed to do high-action with no narration in a way where I very, very rarely didn't understand what was going on, & in a way that didn't ever break immersion. the combination of writing with a good understanding of writing for audio plus sum excellent sound design work is a joy to listen to. the voice actors are phenomenal too. I really enjoyed the few times it got rly trippy.it is a high-action thriller, so it has some of the Hollywood-movie-esque tropes u might expect, and it doesnt spend enough time with the characters to generate much emotional impact for me (you may feel differently, especially if u have any parental instincts), but it has some intriguing SciFi story elements and is a great choice if u just wanna have fun and root for characters trying to complete tasks in the last few seconds before something terrible happens while being blasted with suuuper dramatic drum heavy orchestral pieces hehe
A very impressive production! Everything is so well done, it's a must if you love sci-fi!
Outstanding !!!
Top quality. Totally awesome, production quality, sound stage, acting, 2nd to none. Genuinely thrilling sci fi adventure. Cant wait for the conclusion(fathom) & season 2 (derelict) to continue. This should be picked up for a TV series.
I just finished the Fathom season and am looking forward to Derelict. It did take a couple of episodes to get into it, but then I was hooked. And the final episode did not disappoint - incredible! Both the acting and sound quality is amazing as well.
Probably the best SciFi immersive Audio Drama Podcast out there!
I've been circling this feed for months wondering what it's all about. Thought it might have died but later noticed more episodes being produced. The author provides a succinct and satisfying explanation for the erratic release schedule so I decided to give it a go. Below is a recounting of my journey from being idly interested to a full-blown zealot for this show and the team behind it.E1 intriguing and exciting, perfect pilotE2 oh wow this is tense I think I'm all inE3 this has an interesting mix of influences I wonder what they're going to keep it frE4 holy moly oh no oh dang no no noE5 hey neat we have a whole other thing going over hereE6 they have those too? oh shoot holy crap run run r u nE7 phew thank goodness they made it out of oh no oh beansE8 should call my Dr about these heart palpitations just as soon as they pull thrE9 hello lawyer please give them all of the money now please yes all of it
Really amazing work. What a pity that there seems to be no second episode, could have been one of my favourite audio dramas.
With only the first act or chapter of the series, FATHOM, in mind, I really enjoyed the sound design and quality that the creators have done for the podcast. The audio is phenomenal and can feel so real even during my time at work, there's nothing but high praise in the way FATHOM delivers its story!
So promising, like a Hollywood production. The sound design is simply outstanding, and of course the writing and acting is phenomenal.
The acting, sound design, and storyline are all amazing.
An extremely immersive podcast that's hard to listen to yet even harder to put down. I don't usually go for horror or thrillers, but the writing and stellar acting had me at the edge of my seat every episode. My one complaint would be that the sound design is sometimes too loud, though that's clearly an intentional choice.
