1:12
early June 2020, the
1:14
City of London was in the middle
1:16
of its first lockdown issued in response
1:18
to the coronavirus pandemic. For
1:21
almost three months, UK residents had
1:23
been ordered to stay at home
1:25
to prevent spreading the virus dubbed
1:27
COVID-19. When
1:30
the weather was good, people would catch up
1:32
with their friends and family outdoors where there
1:34
was less risk of spreading the virus in
1:36
the fresh air. But
1:39
during the first week of June, temperatures
1:41
were cool, prompting members of the
1:43
public to want to socialise indoors
1:45
instead. The
1:47
UK government reminded its citizens to
1:50
remain cautious and continue meeting outside
1:52
as much as possible. Bieber
1:56
Henry was a respected social worker
1:58
who took the community's health and
2:00
safety seriously, so as her
2:02
46th birthday approached on Friday, June
2:04
5, she decided to celebrate with
2:07
a sunset picnic in a local
2:09
park instead of a party at
2:11
home. Restrictions
2:13
on movement meant that only loved ones
2:15
who lived within walking distance could attend
2:17
and it would be a fairly small
2:20
gathering. Undeterred,
2:22
Beba sent text messages to
2:24
friends with an invitation to
2:26
attend. Please
2:28
bring a blanket, lights, snacks and
2:30
a drink of your choice. Let's
2:33
have a catch up, play some sophisticated
2:35
music, watch the sunset and
2:37
take it from there. Included
2:41
with the text was a Google Maps
2:44
screenshot of the party's destination, a 250-acre
2:46
park with
2:48
open fields and small woods
2:50
called Friant Country Park. It
2:54
was located near Beba's home of Wembley
2:56
in North West London. One
3:00
person who was able to attend
3:02
the celebration was Beba's younger half-sister,
3:04
27-year-old Nicole Smallman.
3:08
Nicole, who was a freelance photographer and
3:10
artist, lived in the neighbouring town of
3:12
Harrow. Despite
3:14
their 20-year age difference, the sisters were
3:17
close and Nicole helped Beba prepare for
3:19
the picnic. That
3:21
evening, the two went to a
3:23
supermarket to purchase snacks, then headed
3:25
to Friant Country Park in Beba's
3:28
Purple Audi. Video
3:31
footage from London's expansive CCTV
3:33
network captured the two walking
3:35
into the park side by
3:37
side at 7.39pm, chatting
3:39
together and smiling as they carried
3:41
their supplies. The
3:44
sisters selected a spot at the top
3:46
of a hill, scattering cushions and blankets
3:48
around. They had
3:50
also brought some fairy lights and glow
3:53
sticks to add a party atmosphere and
3:55
provide light after the sun went down.
4:00
When the sun started to arrive, the sisters
4:02
waved the lights in the air to draw
4:04
their attention. The spot
4:06
where they were seated afforded a scenic
4:08
view of London, and everyone snapped photographs
4:10
of the pink and purple streaked sky
4:13
as the sunset and dusk fell. There
4:16
was singing, dancing, laughing and chatting, as
4:19
well as lots of eating and drinking.
4:23
When it became dark and the
4:25
hour grew late, Bieber's guests began
4:27
to depart. One
4:30
by one, the partygoers said goodbye
4:32
and headed home, until just Bieber
4:34
and Nicole remained. Left
4:37
alone to enjoy some time together,
4:39
the two sisters chatted, danced and
4:41
snapped photographs of themselves playing with
4:44
the fairy lights. Throughout
4:47
the night, Nicole had been texting
4:49
her boyfriend Adam via the messaging
4:52
platform WhatsApp. At
4:54
1.04 AM, she sent him a
4:56
message that read, I'm dancing in a
4:58
field, accompanied by an emoji
5:01
of a woman dancing. She
5:04
followed up with another text, Going
5:07
Home Soon. The
5:35
following morning of Saturday June 6,
5:38
Will Helmina-Smallman decided to text her
5:40
daughters, Bieber and Nicole, to see
5:42
how their picnic had gone. Will
5:46
Helmina, who went by the nickname Meena,
5:48
had been unable to attend Bieber's party
5:50
as she lived in the coastal town
5:53
of Ramsgate, located almost 80 miles east
5:55
from London in the county of Kent.
6:00
Cole had made sure to send the
6:02
main of photos from the celebration the
6:04
previous night. Their family
6:06
was close knit. As
6:08
well as be burnt. Nicole Mina
6:10
had a third daughter moneyed who
6:12
lived in Holland. Bieber
6:15
and Moneyed were mean his children
6:17
from her first marriage to home
6:19
and Henry a retired Boxer. Nicole.
6:22
Was her only child from her
6:24
second marriage to Christopher Smallman. Baber.
6:27
And money to a close with
6:29
a stepfather and everyone got along
6:31
extremely well. At
6:34
Eleven Twenty three I am mean as sent.
6:36
Do it as a text message in response
6:38
to some pitches date cent of the pigment.
6:42
Loved. The photo could turn out. She.
6:45
Added that she hoped to. They had a
6:47
lovely time and asked them to tell her
6:50
all about it later on. To.
6:52
Her surprise and concern mean I
6:54
didn't hear anything back from either
6:56
of her daughters. Meanwhile.
7:00
Nicole circle of friends were
7:02
also growing concerns. Her
7:05
boyfriend Adam had asked her to let
7:07
him know when she arrived home safely,
7:09
but scene of a did. Adam
7:11
got in touch with Nicole's housemate
7:14
ammo. He said Nicole hadn't come
7:16
home. The. Lack
7:18
of contact with strange. Nicole.
7:21
Loved animals and had a pet bearded
7:23
dragon, the lizard, whom she adored. If
7:26
she ever planned to be away for
7:28
a longer period of time, she would
7:30
provide instructions for his care such as
7:32
went to feed him or changes hate
7:35
them. But
7:37
she hadn't done so this time. Emma.
7:40
Contacted some mutual friends to save they
7:42
had heard from Nicole. None
7:45
of them had. After
7:48
Adam repeatedly called Nicole without success,
7:50
he tried to try cell phone
7:52
with a tracker, up to no
7:54
avail. Hoping that
7:57
Nicole had decided to stay had
7:59
babies house. Adam traveled there
8:01
to check. No. One
8:03
was home. By
8:05
the time Saturday evening rolled
8:07
around, Adam and Nicholas friends
8:09
were becoming increasingly upset. When.
8:15
The women's mother may not concerned
8:17
with Adam and realized nobody had
8:19
heard from Bay Burrow. Nicole see
8:21
knew something was wrong. At.
8:24
Ten Forty two. That not mean a
8:26
cold The police to report her daughter's
8:28
missing. She told them
8:31
what the situation was, how long it
8:33
had been since anyone had heard from
8:35
Baber and Nicole, and provided a detailed
8:37
description of where they were last seen.
8:40
But mean, I got the impression that
8:43
the police didn't share her concern. They.
8:46
Listened to her but didn't seem to
8:48
share her sense of urgency and didn't
8:50
indicate I would do anything to look
8:52
for the women. That
8:55
not mean her and her husband
8:57
Christopher couldn't sleep. They.
8:59
Continue trying to call and text
9:01
Baber and Nicole throughout the night.
9:04
Topping out one message after another.
9:07
Where. Are you. Getting quite
9:09
worried here. Please. Let us
9:11
know you are okay. When.
9:15
Sunday morning rolled around. The women's a
9:17
loved one's knew they would have to
9:19
do something. It had
9:21
been more than twenty four hours since
9:23
Baber and Nicole had bank same. Hoping
9:26
that getting the word out on
9:28
social media might help, Nicole's friends
9:30
posted about Nicole's disappearance on Facebook.
9:33
They. Shared a photo of Nicole
9:35
beneath the heading missing. They
9:38
also started finding hospitals in the area
9:40
to save with I had any patience
9:42
matching the women's description. As.
9:46
The police still hadn't sent out search
9:48
parties. Christopher small man made the decision
9:50
to drive to London to conduct his
9:53
own served. Knuckles. Boyfriend
9:55
Adam had the same idea. Like.
9:58
Me know he had. The police the
10:01
previous night to report his girlfriend
10:03
missing but hadn't gotten anywhere. The
10:06
police had told them they would pay a
10:08
visit to Babies flat so Adam and his
10:10
mother had gone there to wait for them.
10:13
But the police never showed up
10:15
and couldn't say when they would
10:17
arise. Accompanied
10:20
by his parents, Adam decided to
10:22
go to Fry and Country Park.
10:24
The. Place where the women were last known
10:27
to has been. One.
10:31
Set the park. Adam met up with
10:33
a friend of the sister's name to
10:36
Nina Erasmus Food: Attended the picnic on
10:38
Friday night. Nina. Had
10:40
also been concerned after being unable to
10:42
reach the women and had cycled to
10:44
the park by herself hoping to find
10:47
something. She'd spent about
10:49
thirty minutes riding her bike around
10:51
the enormous park looking so our
10:53
friends. Nino
10:55
to cut him and his parents to
10:57
the top of the hill where babies
10:59
celebrations had been held. The
11:02
spot was a five minute walk from
11:04
the Valley Drive entrance to the park.
11:07
It. Was surrounded by sprawling fields
11:09
which would dotted with ponds and
11:11
framed by denser areas of woodland.
11:15
No. Sign of the peak. Told to
11:17
not solely I remained. All.
11:19
Of the blankets, cushions and fairy lights that
11:22
had been strewn around the top of the
11:24
hill when they have gone. The.
11:27
Lack of items belonging to the sisters
11:29
left the impression that they most likely
11:31
packed up their things and to list
11:33
the park rather than something happening to
11:35
them while that was still there. Regardless,
11:39
The groups though decided to search
11:42
their surroundings. They
11:44
split up and began scouring the
11:46
area. While. Adam and
11:48
his parents went in other directions. Nina
11:51
combed through the large field at the
11:53
base of the hill looking for anything
11:55
out of place. then
11:58
something caught her eye A
12:01
mangled pair of expensive designer prescription
12:03
sunglasses lay on the ground glinting
12:06
in the sun. Nearby
12:09
was a long patch of flattened grass.
12:13
Mina's heart sank. She
12:16
immediately recognized the glasses as belonging
12:18
to Bieber. The
12:20
state of them didn't suggest that Bieber
12:22
had left the park safely and of
12:25
her own accord. Uncertain
12:28
what she should do now, Nina picked
12:30
up her phone and called the police
12:32
to report what she'd found. They
12:35
told her to hand the glasses in to
12:37
them, so Nina picked them up and hopped
12:40
back on her bicycle to go to the
12:42
nearest police station. She
12:44
continued to communicate with Adam via
12:46
text. He'd found
12:49
nothing, and when he messaged Nina saying that
12:51
he didn't know what to do, she
12:53
replied, if you can
12:56
bear it, just keep looking.
13:03
Adam and his parents continued to
13:06
search. They called out
13:08
the women's names, hoping desperately for
13:10
a reply while searching through scrub
13:12
and vegetation. Adam
13:15
spotted a second pair of sunglasses,
13:17
but didn't touch them. Then
13:21
Adam's father called out to him.
13:24
Adam rushed over to the location his
13:27
father was searching. Nearby
13:29
was a long trail of flattened
13:31
grass and lying on the ground
13:34
was a black-handled knife with a
13:36
12-centimeter blade. It
13:38
was engraved with the brand name
13:41
Taylor's Eyewitness and looked clean. At
13:46
the clean blade, the sight left
13:48
Adam panicked. Pulling
13:50
out his phone, he dialed 999,
13:52
the emergency services number, and began
13:54
explaining the situation to a dispatcher
13:56
while running along the stretch of
13:59
flames. flattened grass at the same
14:01
time. The
14:03
trail led towards a strip of wooded area
14:05
with a row of trees. Poking
14:09
out from beneath some undergrowth was a pair
14:11
of shoes. Adam
14:15
ran around to a gap in the bushes.
14:18
Diving into the undergrowth, he was
14:20
met with a horrifying sight. About
14:24
one foot away from him lay the
14:26
bodies of two women intertwined together. It
14:30
was Bieber and Nicole. Both
14:33
lay on their sides and they were positioned
14:35
top to toe. It
14:38
looked as though they were locked in an
14:41
embrace with their limbs wrapped around one another.
14:44
Bieber's clothing had been pulled up over her
14:46
head. She had been
14:48
stabbed eight times and her back was
14:50
covered in abrasions from being dragged through
14:53
the rough undergrowth. Nicole's
14:56
clothing had been yanked up above her
14:58
abdomen and she too had abrasions and
15:00
stabbed wounds. But
15:03
Nicole's injuries were far more extensive
15:05
than her sister's. She
15:07
had been stabbed 28 times. Her
15:11
eyes were open and as Adam looked
15:13
at his girlfriend's face, he
15:15
knew that she was dead. He
15:19
fell to the ground and let out
15:21
several guttural screams which was heard by
15:23
the 999 dispatcher on
15:25
the other end of his phone. His
15:28
parents also heard Adam's cries of distress
15:31
and raced over towards him but he
15:33
leapt up to stop them from having
15:35
to see what he'd seen. He
15:38
handed his phone to his father and ordered
15:40
his parents not to go into the bushes,
15:43
then collapsed once again. After
15:49
hearing Adam's screams, a man in
15:51
another area of the park flagged
15:53
down a police officer and directed
15:55
her towards the noise. She
15:58
found Adam and his parents a state
16:00
of shock. The
16:02
officer and a colleague entered the
16:05
scene where the sister's bodies lay
16:07
and confirmed that both were deceased.
16:11
Officers from London's Metropolitan Police
16:13
descended on the park. With
16:16
the ground stretching for 250 acres,
16:18
they were facing an enormous crime
16:20
scene. To preserve
16:23
the area where Bieber and Nicole's bodies
16:25
lay and to prevent it being contaminated
16:27
before forensic experts had a chance to
16:29
examine it, officers set up
16:32
a series of cordon's. The
16:34
innermost cordon framed the hedgerow where
16:37
the women's bodies were. Mina
16:41
Smallman was at home waiting anxiously for
16:43
news when her phone rang with a
16:45
call from Adam. She
16:48
answered and Adam told her, Mina,
16:52
Mina, I need you to sit
16:54
down. We found them, but
16:56
they're gone. Mina
17:00
began to scream uncontrollably. After
17:03
her cries eventually subsided, she remembered
17:06
that her husband was driving to
17:08
Friant Country Park. She
17:11
phoned Christopher and broke the news to
17:13
him that their girls had died. Mina's
17:15
mother and her husband were at home waiting anxiously for the incident. Although
17:17
they knew there was no longer any way
17:19
to help Bieber and Nicole, some of their
17:21
loved ones felt a desire to go to
17:23
the park and be there for them in
17:25
the only way they could. A small
17:29
group gathered at the bottom of the
17:31
hill before the cordon's started and watched
17:33
as forensic units arrived and officers went
17:36
to and from the scene. As
17:39
detailed in the BBC documentary Two
17:42
Daughters, one of Bieber's relatives
17:44
was extremely distraught and begged the
17:46
officers to let him see Bieber.
17:50
We can't do that, one of the
17:52
officers replied, but we will
17:54
look after them. We will take care
17:56
of them. We will respect them.
17:59
We will promise. That. Several.
18:05
Officers were installed at the innermost code
18:07
and to God this is this bodies
18:09
until they could be removed for autopsy
18:12
the following morning. Forensic.
18:14
Tests were set up so that members of
18:16
the public wouldn't say the bodies being taken
18:19
from the park. Further,
18:21
Examinations concerned that whoever killed the two
18:23
women had dragged to them by the
18:25
seat, into the bushes and deliberately position
18:28
to them in the way that was
18:30
sounds. Perhaps. As a way
18:32
to further degrade them. Forty.
18:35
Six year old baby Henry had sustained
18:37
six stab wounds to her chest ones
18:39
that are growing and one to that
18:41
back. The. Know us
18:43
used in the attack had penetrated
18:45
her lungs and heart with one
18:47
chest wound measuring fifteen centimeters deep.
18:51
This particular injury would have
18:53
rendered Bieber unconscious within seconds.
18:56
She. Had no defensive wounds, indicating
18:58
that her till I had caught
19:00
her by surprise. Her.
19:03
Twenty seven year old sister Nicole
19:05
Smallman would have been witness to
19:07
her sisters attack. Unlike
19:10
baseball, Nicole had numerous defensive
19:12
injuries and her attack had
19:14
been far more brutal. Likely.
19:16
Because she had tried to fight back.
19:19
See. Had been stabbed twenty eight
19:22
times and had injuries to
19:24
her chest, back die tip,
19:26
shoulder, arms and hands. Investigators
19:30
appealed for anybody who had been
19:32
at Friant Country Park on the
19:35
evening of Friday June. five for
19:37
early morning on Saturday June Six
19:39
to come forward. They
19:41
described the location where Be burned to
19:44
nicole had been and said that if
19:46
anyone had seen or heard anything suspicious
19:48
than it was especially important that they
19:51
share what they knew. Quote.
19:54
You. may have stumbled upon items of
19:56
property but not realized the significance
19:58
of them If you
20:00
did, you may well have information
20:02
that could assist us hugely, no
20:05
matter how insignificant it may
20:07
seem." Several
20:11
witnesses did come forward. At
20:14
1.45 am on the morning of
20:16
Saturday, June 6th, a local woman
20:18
named Elaine Williams had been at
20:20
home watching television when she suddenly
20:22
heard a disturbance from the direction
20:24
of the park. It
20:27
sounded like a man shouting. This
20:30
voice was followed by two female voices
20:32
shouting back. Then
20:34
Elaine could only hear one woman's
20:37
voice, followed by a blood-curdling scream.
20:40
To Elaine, it sounded like a massive
20:42
argument between two groups who didn't know
20:45
each other. Later
20:48
that morning, a man named Martin
20:50
Ridgway headed to the park armed
20:52
with several bin bags. Martin
20:55
was a member of Barnhill Conservation Group
20:57
and would spend time picking up rubbish
20:59
as part of that work. As
21:02
he made his way through the park
21:04
looking for litter, Martin came across a
21:06
large pile of abandoned belongings. There
21:10
were several cushions, two backpacks,
21:12
a large blue hold-all bag,
21:14
a white paper bag, and
21:16
some food packaging. Some
21:19
of the items were covered in red
21:21
marks, which Martin assumed were ketchup stains,
21:23
because there were several empty sauce pots
21:26
amongst the detritus. He
21:28
threw the belongings away in some park
21:30
bins. Police
21:32
were later able to track those items
21:34
down. The
21:37
following morning of Sunday, June 7, shortly
21:40
before Adam Stone and his parents
21:42
commenced their search of the park,
21:45
a woman named Linda Guerrero was
21:47
walking her pet Beagle Bambi through
21:49
the grounds. As
21:51
she passed some bushes near the top of a
21:54
hill, Linda noticed two bodies
21:56
entwined on the ground. where
22:00
she was standing, Linda could see the
22:02
bare back of one of the individuals.
22:05
She assumed they were a couple
22:07
asleep in an embrace. Sometimes
22:10
unhoused people would sleep rough in
22:13
Fryand Country Park, so Linda wasn't
22:15
particularly alarmed by the sight. She
22:19
called out, are you okay? Are
22:21
you alright, mate? When
22:24
there was no reply, Linda continued on
22:26
her way. She
22:29
later phoned Streetlink, an organisation that
22:31
helps rough sleepers in London to
22:33
report the incident. It
22:36
wasn't until she learned of Bieber
22:38
Henry and Nicole Smorman's murders that
22:40
she realised the significance of what
22:42
she had seen. Fryand
22:48
Country Park remained closed off to
22:50
the public while police scoured its
22:52
grounds for further evidence. A
22:55
heavy downpour of rain across London on
22:57
Saturday June 6, the day
22:59
before the sisters were found, led to
23:01
fears that evidence had been washed away.
23:05
This rain was also the reason that the
23:07
knife recovered at the crime scene appeared to
23:09
be clean. But
23:11
when investigators picked it up, they
23:13
saw the underside was stained with
23:15
blood. Testing
23:18
revealed that the blood belonged to two
23:20
different people, Nicole Smorman
23:22
and an unidentified male. Thanks
23:27
to London's comprehensive network of CCTV
23:29
cameras, investigators had been able to
23:31
trace the sisters' actions in the
23:33
lead-up to the picnic. They
23:36
had been captured on camera shopping for
23:39
picnic supplies at a co-op supermarket, and
23:41
one of the items they purchased was a
23:43
bottle of tonic water. The
23:46
bottle was subsequently found in a bush
23:48
near the women's bodies. It
23:51
had blood on it. Other
23:53
bottles of rose and Prosecco recovered at
23:56
the scene also had traces of blood
23:58
on them. A
24:01
pair of blue latex gloves was
24:03
also found. One
24:05
of the gloves was heavily stained with
24:07
blood and damaged along the center as
24:09
though slashed with a knife. If
24:12
the killer had been wearing the gloves,
24:15
it appeared that they had suffered an
24:17
injury during the attack, most likely when
24:19
Nicole Smallman had fought back. Investigators
24:23
were able to obtain a DNA profile from
24:25
the blood on the bottles, the glove, and
24:28
the discarded items that a member of the
24:30
public had thrown away. It
24:32
was from the same unidentified male as
24:34
the blood on the knife. This
24:38
individual's blood was also found on
24:40
some vegetation near the women's bodies,
24:43
from one of Nicole's feet and
24:45
on Bieber's trainers, hand, and leggings.
24:48
This blood had likely been left when the
24:51
killer dragged the women by their feet into
24:53
the bushes. There
24:55
was no record of this person in
24:58
the national DNA database. Divers
25:02
searched a pond in the park for possible
25:04
evidence. They recovered
25:06
two smartphones which had belonged to
25:08
Bieber and Nicole. Their
25:11
killer had seemingly taken them from the
25:13
scene and subsequently disposed of them. A
25:17
forensic examination would reveal that the
25:19
last contact they'd had with friends
25:21
or family was when Nicole texted
25:24
her boyfriend Adam just after 1am
25:26
on the Saturday morning. Between
25:30
1.26am and 3.48am, someone had
25:32
repeatedly tried to gain access
25:34
to Bieber Henry's phone. Its
25:37
screen had been turned off and then on again
25:39
at least 130 times. Thanks
25:44
to a step counter on the phone, police could
25:46
see that whoever had been holding it had walked
25:49
about 1.3 miles during
25:51
that time before switching the phone off
25:53
and throwing it into the pond. Also
25:57
found on the device were a number of
25:59
photos. that the sisters had taken throughout the
26:02
night. There were shots of
26:04
them celebrating with their friends and then pictures
26:06
of just the two of them after everyone
26:08
else had gone home. Bieber
26:11
and Nicole had set up a timer
26:13
on the phone's camera, draped themselves with
26:15
fairy lights, and snapped more than a
26:18
hundred pictures as they laughed and danced
26:20
in the dark. The
26:23
final photograph was taken at
26:25
1.13am. In
26:28
this image, the women appeared distracted.
26:31
Instead of posing like they had in the
26:33
other shot, both were looking
26:35
to their left as though something
26:37
in that direction had drawn their
26:39
attention. Detectives
26:41
suspected that this was the moment
26:44
their attacker had made himself known.
26:51
No one who knew Bieber and Nicole could think
26:53
of anyone who would want to harm them. Bieber
26:57
was a highly respected and popular
26:59
senior social worker at Buckinghamshire Council,
27:01
who went above and beyond for
27:03
the children she worked with. Bieber
27:06
had her own daughter, whom she adored, and
27:09
was about to become a grandmother for the
27:11
first time. She
27:13
made friends easily and was well-liked
27:15
for her positive demeanor. Nicole
27:18
worked as a freelance photographer and shared her
27:21
sister's upbeat outlook on life. Her
27:24
parents often joked that she should have
27:26
been born in the 1960s, as she
27:29
was a flower child at heart who
27:31
cared deeply about social justice, animals, and
27:33
the natural world.
27:36
For the past six years she had been in
27:38
a relationship with her boyfriend, Adam Stone. The
27:42
couple had lived together with Adam's parents for a
27:44
while, but Nicole had recently moved
27:47
into a flat with her housemate. Nevertheless,
27:50
the pair remained as close as ever. Prior
27:54
to Nicole leaving for Bieber's party, Adam had made sure
27:57
to give her money so she could catch a
28:00
cab home. Bieber
28:03
and Nicole also had good relationships
28:05
with their family members who were
28:07
highly respected members of the community.
28:10
Their mother, Mina, was a retired
28:12
archdeacon in the Anglican church. Mina's
28:16
father was Nigerian and she had been
28:18
the first black woman to hold that
28:20
title. There was
28:22
nothing in either of the women's lives that
28:25
pointed to them being targeted by someone they
28:27
knew. This appeared
28:29
to be confirmed by the killer's DNA
28:31
recovered at the scene. The
28:34
fact that it belonged to an unknown
28:36
male suggested to police that the sisters
28:38
had been victims of a random attack.
28:43
Detectives went public with this information
28:45
telling journalists that the women were
28:47
murdered by a stranger and they
28:49
needed the public's help to find
28:51
him. The suspect
28:53
they were looking for had likely suffered
28:55
an injury during the attack which resulted
28:58
in significant bleeding. If
29:00
anyone had seen somebody injured or
29:02
acting suspiciously around the Friant Country
29:05
Park area, they were urged to
29:07
report what they knew. A
29:11
few leads trickled in. Local
29:14
residents said there had recently been a
29:16
man hanging about the park following women.
29:19
He was aged in his 50s. While
29:23
pursuing these tip-offs, police arrested
29:25
several different men but
29:27
all of them were later released without
29:29
charges. Some
29:32
people, including the sister's mother,
29:34
Mina, felt that the brutal
29:36
double murder wasn't receiving enough
29:38
press attention to generate worthwhile
29:40
leads. Although
29:42
London's media had reported on the
29:45
crime, it wasn't receiving front-page coverage
29:47
or a national spotlight. Users
29:50
of the online forum, WebSlooths, complained that
29:53
they hadn't even heard about the murders
29:55
until stumbling across a thread on the
29:57
website. Do
30:00
The nature of the coverage seemed at
30:02
odds with the terrifying nature of the
30:05
random attacks. Than
30:07
two weeks after the murders
30:09
news broke that finally seemed

to capture Depresses attention. Case

33:08
June of 2020, 32-year-old
33:11
police constable Jamie Lewis had worked
33:13
as an officer with the Metropolitan
33:15
Police Service for just over nine
33:17
months. Prior to
33:19
joining the Met, as it was known,
33:21
Lewis had spent several years with the
33:23
British Transport Police. At
33:25
3.30am on the morning of Monday, June
33:28
8, 2020, Lewis arrived
33:30
at Friant Country Park with a number of
33:32
his colleagues. The
33:34
bodies of Bieber Henry and Nicole Smallman had
33:36
been found in the park roughly 15 hours
33:39
earlier, and officers were needed to guard
33:41
the scene overnight until the bodies could
33:44
be safely removed. Jamie
33:48
Lewis and several colleagues were assigned
33:50
to the cordon closest to the
33:52
sister's bodies, which weren't visible
33:54
from where they were standing. The
33:58
officers were told the general location. Within
34:00
the thicket where the women lay but
34:02
weren't shown the bodies None
34:05
were wearing full barrier forensic clothing
34:09
They were not to search the woodland area
34:12
Their job was simply to keep watch and
34:14
to make sure no one entered the scene
34:16
in order to preserve its integrity Each
34:19
of the four officers was given a
34:21
separate post to guard and told they
34:23
must remain in place until colleagues arrived
34:25
to relieve them Under
34:28
no circumstances were they to enter the
34:30
bushes where the women's bodies lay At
34:35
350 a.m. About 20 minutes
34:37
after arriving at the park Jamie
34:39
Lewis took out his phone and opened
34:42
the messaging application of whatsapp He
34:45
then typed a message to a group chat labeled
34:47
the 18 Me
34:50
Izzy Dennis and mad are living the
34:52
Wembley dream He
34:55
attached a photo of a forensic tent set
34:57
up at the park then hit sand The
35:00
group chat consisted of 41 different
35:03
metropolitan police officers One
35:06
soon sent a reply enjoying
35:08
the sunrise Lewis
35:11
responded Unfortunately, I'm
35:13
sat next to two dead birds full
35:15
of stab wounds Another
35:18
officer replied with a joke about
35:21
Lewis's use of the slang term
35:23
birds referring to women He
35:25
asked Who's been out
35:27
stabbing pigeons? Lewis
35:30
responded by sending a photograph he'd
35:32
taken of Bieber and Nicole's bodies
35:35
Despite being instructed not to breach
35:37
the cordon One
35:40
of Lewis's colleagues from the North
35:43
East London police station, 45-year-old police
35:45
constable Dennis Jaffa was also using
35:47
whatsapp to message nine of his
35:49
friends in another group chat He
35:52
sent the group a daily mail article about
35:54
the double homicide and informed them that he
35:56
was at the scene now take
36:00
some photos of the bodies to share with them.
36:04
Over the next several hours, Lewis and
36:06
Jaffa repeatedly left their posts to walk
36:08
back and forth to chat with each
36:10
other. Both
36:12
breached the cordon to take multiple
36:15
up-close photographs of Bieber and Nicole.
36:18
Jaffa took four photographs, while
36:20
Lewis took two. Lewis
36:23
edited one photo in the social
36:25
media app Snapchat to superimpose his face
36:28
next to the bodies, as though he'd
36:30
taken a selfie with them. Both
36:34
men shared some of their photos with
36:36
friends who didn't work with the police
36:38
and told them that the two victims
36:40
were a 14-year-old and a pregnant 20-year-old.
36:44
It is unclear where they obtained
36:46
this incorrect information. Lewis
36:49
referred to Bieber and Nicole as
36:51
two stabbed-up dead women. When
36:54
Jaffa was asked by a friend if the
36:56
crime scene was bad, he replied, ''Not
36:59
really. I've seen worse.'' Lewis
37:03
also showed the photos on his phone to
37:05
several different people in person. Two
37:08
of these were police officers. One
37:10
was a female probationary officer. She
37:14
was disgusted by the photographs and
37:16
told Lewis his actions were inappropriate.
37:19
At least one member of the
37:22
18-whatsapp group who had been sent
37:24
similar photos agreed and reported the
37:26
matter to their higher-ups at the
37:28
Metropolitan Police. On
37:30
Friday, June 19, the Independent
37:32
Office for Police Conduct, also known
37:35
as the IOPC, was alerted. Three
37:38
days later, Lewis and Jaffa had
37:41
their phones seized and were arrested
37:43
for misconduct in public office. During
37:49
an examination of Jaffa's phone, it was
37:51
found he'd also used a racist term
37:54
to refer to South Asian men. When
37:57
Lewis received a text using that same term,
37:59
he made no objection. The
38:02
Met issued a press release about the
38:05
arrests and the story quickly made headlines
38:07
across the UK. Bieber
38:09
and Nicole's family had the news broken
38:11
to them in person by a member
38:14
of the IOPC. For
38:17
Mina Smallman and the sisters other loved
38:19
ones, this was the final straw. They
38:22
had felt from the start that Bieber
38:25
and Nicole's case hadn't been taken seriously.
38:28
First, there had been the delayed police
38:30
response when they were reported missing. Mina
38:33
put this down to racism and
38:35
classism. Both her
38:37
daughters were of Nigerian heritage and
38:39
Bieber lived in a public housing
38:41
flat in Wembley, a predominantly black
38:44
neighbourhood. As she
38:46
told the BBC, quote, I
38:49
knew instantly why they didn't care. They
38:51
didn't care because they looked at my daughter's
38:53
address and thought they knew who she was,
38:55
a black woman who lives
38:57
in a council estate. Cases
39:01
involving missing white women from middle
39:03
class backgrounds seemed to be taken
39:05
more seriously by the media as
39:07
well. Mina Smallman
39:10
would later note that the story
39:12
about the officer's misconduct generated far
39:14
more media attention than the women's
39:17
disappearance and murder had. But that
39:20
didn't mean Mina thought the misconduct
39:22
was unworthy of attention. The
39:25
news that her daughter's dignity had been
39:27
further degraded by two people charged with
39:30
protecting them was utterly devastating for the
39:32
grieving mother. As
39:34
she said in an interview with The
39:36
Guardian, Mina hadn't even imagined what her
39:39
daughter's bodies looked like until she learnt
39:41
officers took photos of them. She
39:44
was already barely holding on by a
39:46
thread and now she suddenly began having
39:48
images flash through her mind of what
39:50
the crime scene might have looked like.
39:53
Her pain somehow deepened. Mina
39:57
told the BBC, quote, This
40:01
has taken our grief to another place.
40:04
If we ever needed an example of
40:06
how toxic it has become, those police
40:08
officers felt so safe, so untouchable, that
40:11
they felt they could take photographs of
40:13
dead black girls and send them on.
40:16
It speaks volumes of the ethos that
40:19
runs through the Metropolitan Police." Bieber
40:23
and Nicole's friends and family were horrified
40:25
to think that while they had been
40:27
standing vigil at the park, desperate for
40:29
one final glimpse of their loved ones,
40:32
members of the police were taking
40:34
dehumanizing photographs of them and making
40:36
crass jokes. In
40:39
the BBC documentary Two Daughters,
40:41
one of Bieber's cousins stated,
40:44
"...those two police officers did something
40:46
worse than them being murdered. We
40:49
can't change that, but the dignity
40:52
that they deserved in their death, they
40:54
took that from them, and I
40:56
will never forgive them for that." In
41:03
the wake of the misconduct allegations,
41:05
the family and the public's trust
41:07
in the Metropolitan Police Service took
41:09
a severe hit. Despite
41:12
this, detectives continued working to solve
41:15
the case. The
41:17
suspect's DNA hadn't matched anyone in
41:19
the national DNA database, so detectives
41:21
asked the National Crime Agency to
41:24
run it against their records for
41:26
a familial match. This
41:29
time, there was a hit. On
41:32
Tuesday, June 30, detectives discovered their
41:35
suspect was related to a man
41:37
named Kamal Hussein who had previously
41:39
received a caution. The
41:42
DNA indicated the suspect was a
41:44
close family member of Kamal's, most
41:47
likely his child. Kamal
41:50
was from an Iraqi Kurdish background and
41:53
had four children with his ex-wife who
41:55
resided on the south side of London
41:57
in Eltham. the
42:00
children were school-aged, with the oldest
42:02
being just 18 years old. Kamal
42:06
had often worried about his firstborn,
42:08
who was a boy named Daniel.
42:11
Kamal would tell a neighbour that Daniel had
42:13
gotten mixed up with the wrong crowd, and
42:16
he was concerned about the direction he was
42:18
heading in. Daniel
42:21
had been in his early teens when his
42:23
parents split up. It had
42:25
been an unhappy household prior to
42:27
the divorce, characterised by yelling and
42:29
arguments. Both the
42:32
police and paramedics had attended the property
42:34
on more than one occasion. After
42:38
his marriage ended, Kamal relocated to
42:40
north London, settling into a residence
42:42
in Kingsbury, just a short walk
42:45
from Friant Country Park. But
42:48
his son Daniel's issues continued.
42:52
In October 2017, when Daniel was 15, his teachers
42:55
discovered that he had been accessing far right propaganda
42:58
and looking for images of corpses on school
43:00
computers. He was subsequently referred to
43:07
PREVENT, the UK government's
43:09
counter-extremism programme. PREVENT
43:12
was designed to stop vulnerable individuals
43:15
being groomed by and drawn into
43:17
terrorist organisations, such as the extremist
43:20
Islamist group ISIS. Adolescents
43:24
such as Daniel, who were
43:26
isolated and from immigrant backgrounds,
43:28
were seen as especially susceptible
43:30
to being radicalised. Daniel
43:34
Hossain was assigned a mentor and
43:36
was discharged from PREVENT just over six
43:39
months later in May 2018. Supervisors determined
43:44
they had, quote, no
43:46
outstanding concerns at that time
43:48
with respect to violent extremism
43:51
or terrorism. They
43:53
continued to provide support and conducted
43:55
two further reviews of Daniel over
43:57
the next year. No
44:00
additional need for concern was
44:02
identified and no further interventions
44:04
were deemed necessary. Armed
44:09
with the DNA evidence of a
44:11
familial tie between Kamal Hussein and
44:13
their suspect, detectives
44:15
raced to gain access
44:17
to CCTV footage from
44:19
various cameras surrounding Kamal's
44:21
home. It turned out that although Daniel
44:23
still lived with his mother in Altam, he
44:26
had been staying with his father at
44:28
the time when Bieber Henry and Nicole
44:30
Smallman were murdered. Within
44:33
an hour and a half, investigators
44:36
had recovered some incredibly alarming footage.
44:40
On the afternoon of Wednesday, June
44:42
3, two days before Bieber's birthday
44:44
picnic, Daniel Hussein left his father's
44:47
address and headed to an ASDA
44:49
supermarket in Collendale, North London. He
44:53
cameras captured the slight dark-haired young man
44:55
wearing a blue jacket and light jeans
44:58
as he browsed the aisles of the
45:00
store. He selected
45:02
a tailor's eye-witness knife block which
45:05
contained a set of five black-handled
45:07
kitchen knives along with some chewing
45:09
gum, cans of drink, lemons and
45:12
two candles. Due
45:14
to the COVID-19 pandemic, Hussein was
45:17
wearing a face mask as he
45:19
shopped. When
45:21
he took the items to the checkout to
45:23
pay for them, a clerk asked to see
45:25
some proof of age due to his purchase
45:27
of the knives. Hussein
45:29
pulled out his passport and removed
45:31
his face mask so he could
45:33
be identified. Hussein
45:36
returned to the ASDA later
45:38
that day to buy some
45:41
extra-strong Uni-bond power tape. Two
45:44
days later, on Friday, June 5, Hussein
45:46
left his father's home again and
45:48
caught a bus to a Morrison
45:51
supermarket to collect some items he'd
45:53
purchased the day prior on Amazon,
45:55
a balaclava and two folding
45:57
shovels. also
46:00
bought some alcohol. At
46:04
8.40pm, CCTV cameras on Lakesburg
46:06
Close captured Hossain entering the
46:09
northeast corner of Friant Country
46:11
Park. This
46:13
wasn't far from the Valley Drive entrance
46:16
where Bieber Henry and Nicole Smallman had
46:18
arrived one hour earlier. As
46:21
he strolled into the park, Hossain
46:24
was carrying a rucksack and clearly
46:26
wearing blue latex gloves and a
46:28
mask. The
46:31
next time he would appear on camera was
46:33
almost seven hours later at 3.08am when he
46:36
was captured leaving the pitch black park and
46:38
heading in the direction of his father's house.
46:42
Hossain had removed the pants he'd been
46:44
wearing earlier and tied his jacket around
46:47
his waist, leaving his lower
46:49
legs exposed. His
46:51
right hand was tucked tightly into
46:53
his jacket's waistband. CCTV
46:57
cameras tracked Hossain back to his father's
46:59
home, which he reached at 4.07am. After
47:04
he knocked on the front door,
47:06
his father opened it and Daniel
47:08
Hossain disappeared inside. At
47:15
1am on Wednesday July 1, officers
47:17
armed with tasers descended on the
47:19
home of Hossain's mother. The
47:23
double-storey brown brick townhouse was one
47:25
of several identical attached residences that
47:27
sat side by side in a
47:29
row on a quiet cul-de-sac. It
47:33
was mere hours after detectives
47:35
had discovered the familiar DNA
47:37
link and the incriminating CCTV
47:39
footage. They
47:41
knocked on the door and after a
47:44
few moments, a light flicked on inside.
47:47
A skinny young man pulled back a sheer
47:49
curtain to look at the waiting officers, then
47:52
opened the door. The
47:55
police immediately ordered him to raise his hands
47:57
and informed him that he was under a
48:00
rest. Daniel
48:02
Hossain lifted his hands, placed them
48:04
on his head and silently stepped
48:06
over the threshold. Officers
48:09
handcuffed him and transferred him
48:11
to Wandsworth police station. Multiple
48:15
injuries were visible on Hossain's right
48:17
hand. His middle finger had
48:20
a deep cut near the tip which
48:22
had been stitched up and he also
48:24
had several stitches a centimeter or so
48:26
below his first finger. When
48:29
asked about the cuts Hossain replied,
48:32
I was getting robbed. Records
48:35
would show he had visited a hospital
48:37
the day after the murders and presented
48:39
with the cuts to his right hand.
48:42
He initially told staff he'd been
48:44
mugged the previous night but
48:46
he later told the plastic surgeon who treated
48:48
his injuries that the mugging had been two
48:51
or three days earlier. He
48:53
didn't want to report the crime to the police.
48:57
Hossain then told detectives that he
48:59
had autism spectrum disorder and problems
49:01
with his memory. After
49:04
that he refused to speak
49:06
further. He answered
49:08
every question the detectives asked him with
49:10
the same refrain, no
49:13
comment. While
49:16
Hossain was being interviewed officers
49:18
searched his mother's home. In
49:21
Hossain's bedroom they found a blue
49:24
latex glove that matched the ones
49:26
found in Friant Park. In
49:29
his wardrobe they found the balaclava and
49:31
one of the folding shovels that Hossain
49:33
had bought one day before the murders.
49:37
The other folding shovel was never
49:39
found nor were the
49:41
jacket or the trousers Hossain had been wearing
49:43
on the night in question. A
49:47
book of spells was found in Hossain's
49:49
room along with some hand-drawn pictures of
49:51
what looked like a cult symbols. Officers
49:55
also found a piece of paper taken from
49:57
a loose-leaf folder that was covered in hand
50:00
writing. It
50:02
was headlined agreement. Below
50:05
that was what appeared to be a kind
50:07
of contract. It read,
50:11
For the mighty king, Luciferuge,
50:13
rofocow, Perform
50:15
a minimum of six sacrifices every
50:17
six months for as long as
50:19
I am free and physically capable.

50:36
receive fruitful rewards in return for the
50:38
future sacrifices I make to you, the
50:41
rewards could consist of wealth and
50:43
power. To
50:45
never be suspected of any crimes by
50:47
the police and also that the police
50:49
will never know of any crimes that
50:51
I have done and that I will
50:54
do. At the
50:57
bottom of the page were the
50:59
words signed by followed by spaces
51:01
for two signatures. One
51:04
was for King Luciferuge rofocow
51:06
and was left blank. The
51:09
other was assigned to Daniel who
51:12
had signed his name in blood. Case

52:48
tests would confirm that the blood
52:50
on the contract belonged to Daniel
52:52
Hossain. His fingerprints
52:54
were also all over the document.
52:58
Research would uncover that Lucifuge
53:00
Rofocal was a demon named
53:02
in the 18th or 19th
53:04
century book, The Grand Grimoire.
53:08
This occult text contains instructions
53:10
for summoning demons and contains
53:13
a quote, hierarchy of hell,
53:15
a list of different evil
53:17
supernatural beings and their roles.
53:21
According to the Grand Grimoire,
53:23
Lucifuge Rofocal is supposedly in
53:25
charge of hell's government and
53:27
treasury. Investigators
53:31
realized they had just uncovered
53:33
a motive. Hossain
53:35
had seemingly believed that if he
53:37
murdered victims as sacrificial offerings to
53:40
a demon he believed in, then
53:42
he would win the lottery, gain
53:45
power and escape police attention. Hossain's
53:48
misogynistic views led to him
53:51
deciding to only target women.
53:55
Another document found in Hossain's possessions was
53:57
a handwritten letter to a new artist.
54:00
other demon named Queen Byleth.
54:03
In this note, Hossain requested that the
54:05
demon make a particular girl at his
54:08
school fall in love with him and
54:10
believe that he was the only person
54:12
for her. He
54:14
also wanted to be more
54:16
attractive to women romantically. In
54:20
exchange for these things, Hossain would
54:22
burn incense every two weeks, make
54:25
offerings of sweet drinks and chocolate,
54:27
burn red candles, and
54:30
shed more blood. Based
54:34
on these documents, it was clear that
54:36
Daniel Hossain had intended to kill more
54:38
women. Yet in the
54:40
four weeks since Bieber and Nicole's murders,
54:43
there had been no further slayings. Detectives
54:47
believed this was due to the hand
54:49
injuries Hossain sustained during the crime. He
54:53
was unable to even make a fist
54:55
with his right hand, which prevented him
54:57
from attacking more victims. It
55:00
was also exactly what had brought him
55:02
to their attention. Daniel
55:05
Hossain refused to provide police with a
55:07
blood sample but agreed to let them
55:09
take a swab of his cheek. After
55:13
this swab was tested for DNA, it
55:15
was confirmed that the blood of the
55:17
unknown male at the scene was a
55:19
billion times more likely to have come
55:22
from Hossain than from anyone else. He
55:25
appeared stunned upon learning they were able
55:27
to receive these results when he had
55:29
refused to give them his blood. On
55:34
Thursday, June 4, the day
55:36
before Bieber's party, Hossain had set
55:38
up an online betting account with
55:41
lottogo.com, which ran bets on the
55:43
Mega Million Super Jackpot. His
55:47
bank records indicated he had placed
55:49
five Mega Millions bets and one
55:51
Mega Million Syndicate Bet on Sunday,
55:53
June 7. This
55:56
was the lottery named in Hossain's blood
55:59
signed contract. and its price total was £321
56:01
million. Next
56:06
to the contract, officers found three
56:08
lottery tickets purchased on Tuesday, June
56:12
Hussein had also purchased some
56:14
online scratch card games. In
56:17
total, he had spent £162.88 trying to win the lottery in
56:19
the days after the murders. None
56:26
of his attempts were successful. An
56:33
examination of Hussein's electronic footprint showed
56:35
that he was fixated by the
56:38
occult. Just
56:40
a few hours prior to his arrest,
56:42
Hussein had gone online and logged into
56:44
a forum that was owned by an
56:46
American man named EA Cowetting.
56:50
Cowetting was a misogynist, a
56:52
neo-Nazi, and a kind of
56:54
occult influencer. Unlike
56:57
more mainstream pagan religions such
56:59
as Wicca which emphasised nature-based
57:02
spirituality, Cowetting's occultism
57:04
encouraged violence and harmful
57:06
practices. The
57:09
forum he ran was part
57:11
of a larger website where
57:13
Cowetting sold merchandise, shared spells
57:15
and occult instruction, and offered
57:17
one-on-one classes to followers. In
57:21
his writings, Cowetting encouraged people
57:23
to commit ritualistic murders, instructed
57:25
them on selecting victims, and
57:27
described how to kill someone
57:29
with a knife. Cowetting
57:32
was affiliated with the self-described
57:34
Satanic Neo-Nazi group in the
57:36
US called the Order of
57:39
Nine Angles, or ONA. While
57:43
most people who identify as Satanists
57:45
or atheists who don't believe in
57:47
deities at all, ONA members
57:49
do believe in the devil and
57:51
other demonic entities. Between
57:54
2019 and 2021, seven young men sentenced for neo-ninths. charges
58:00
had been radicalized by the
58:03
ONA's content. Daniel
58:06
Hussein had joined Co-Etting's forum two years
58:08
earlier in March 2018. At the time
58:10
he was being assessed
58:15
and supervised by the
58:17
counter-terrorism program PREVENT. They
58:20
were monitoring him for signs of
58:22
Islamic extremism but nothing was found.
58:26
After PREVENT stopped checking up on
58:28
Hussein, his obsession with demons only
58:30
grew as did his
58:32
misogyny. In
58:35
one post to Co-Etting's forum, Hussein
58:37
described himself as a psychic vampire
58:40
and said he felt a natural
58:42
connection with some supernatural beings and
58:44
demons. Hussein bragged
58:47
that he was skilled in some areas
58:49
of magic but needed to practice more
58:51
to keep up his abilities. He
58:54
said he particularly loved Satanism and
58:57
Norse magic and was a big fan
58:59
of EA Co-Etting. He
59:02
had even learned his first spell which
59:04
was a love spell from Co-Etting. Hussein
59:07
asked other posters for advice
59:09
on creating demonic packs. It
59:14
appeared that Hussein's contract with
59:16
Lucifuge Raffikal had been directly
59:18
inspired by Co-Etting's work. Co-Etting
59:22
told his followers that this particular demon
59:24
was the one to enter into packs
59:26
with but added they would also have
59:28
to take real world action to ensure
59:30
their wishes would be fulfilled. He
59:34
provided detailed instructions for writing up
59:36
such packs including that the contract
59:38
writer should request wealth and sign
59:41
the document in their own blood.
59:44
The packs should also be brought before
59:46
the demon by candlelight. When
59:49
Hussein bought the knife he used
59:51
to kill Bieber and Nicole he
59:53
also purchased some candles. Co-Etting's
59:58
real name was Matthew. Lawrence
1:00:00
and he was based in Utah. He
1:00:03
had a number of prior convictions for
1:00:05
drugs and weapon possession charges. At
1:00:08
the time of Hossain's arrest, Cowetting had
1:00:11
a large social media following with
1:00:13
128,000 followers on Facebook and 87,000 YouTube subscribers.
1:00:15
After the link between Cowetting
1:00:22
and Hossain was made, a public
1:00:24
backlash would lead to these platforms
1:00:26
removing Cowetting and his content. However,
1:00:29
as of the date of
1:00:32
this episode's release, e-commerce site
1:00:34
Amazon still sells numerous books
1:00:36
co-authored by Cowetting. Detectives
1:00:42
were unable to uncover the extent
1:00:45
of Daniel Hossain's radicalization as he
1:00:47
refused to provide the passwords to
1:00:49
his laptop and iPad. He
1:00:52
had also thrown his phone away so it
1:00:54
wouldn't fall into police hands. This
1:00:57
prevented the police from accessing 80% of
1:01:00
Hossain's data. The
1:01:03
UK's Crown Prosecution Service, or CPS,
1:01:05
took the matter to the US
1:01:07
courts in an attempt to force
1:01:09
Apple to hand over the data.
1:01:12
However, the American judge ruled against
1:01:14
their application, finding that the CPS
1:01:17
hadn't offered evidence that there was
1:01:19
anything on Hossain's devices that would
1:01:21
directly link him to the murders.
1:01:26
When Mina Smallman found out her daughters
1:01:28
died due to their killer believing in
1:01:30
demons, she actually felt a sense of
1:01:33
strength. As a
1:01:35
retired Anglican archdeacon, she found solace
1:01:37
in her faith, telling
1:01:39
the BBC, This
1:01:42
is my territory. I understand
1:01:44
this. I'm the
1:01:46
light. He's the darkness. Daniel
1:01:51
Hossain was charged with two counts of murder and one count of possession
1:01:53
of a knife with intent. He entered a plea of not guilty. Hossain
1:02:02
was adamant that the person shown
1:02:04
in the CCTV footage was not
1:02:06
him and said his bank card
1:02:08
used to purchase the knives had
1:02:10
been stolen. He'd
1:02:12
reported the matter to his bank almost
1:02:14
two weeks after the murders. Hossain
1:02:18
also claimed that the demonic pact
1:02:20
found in his room didn't belong
1:02:22
to him, though he offered
1:02:24
no explanation for how his fingerprints and
1:02:26
DNA came to be on it. His
1:02:31
trial began one year after the murders
1:02:33
on Wednesday, June 9, 2021. Bieber
1:02:37
Henry and Nicole Smallman's loved ones
1:02:39
testified about how they'd found the
1:02:41
women's bodies during a search of
1:02:44
the park, while detectives and forensic
1:02:46
experts detailed all of the evidence
1:02:48
tying Hossain to the double murder.
1:02:51
Prosecutors theorized that Hossain had selected
1:02:54
the two sisters to be his
1:02:56
first victims after having his attention
1:02:58
drawn by the fairy lights they
1:03:00
were carrying. He
1:03:02
had lain in wait under cover of
1:03:04
darkness at the park, watching the two
1:03:06
sisters as they danced together and laughed
1:03:09
on the hilltop. Then
1:03:11
he launched his attack. Hossain
1:03:14
didn't testify in his own defense.
1:03:17
His legal team pointed to the fact
1:03:19
that two metropolitan police officers were found
1:03:22
to have breached the crime scene to
1:03:24
take photos of the sisters' bodies. They
1:03:27
argued that this may have
1:03:29
compromised evidence, but provided no
1:03:31
explanation as to how Hossain's
1:03:34
blood could have otherwise been
1:03:36
found at the scene. Hossain's
1:03:38
behavior in court disturbed those
1:03:40
present. He kept trying
1:03:43
to make eye contact with Bieber
1:03:45
and Nicole's mother, Mina Smallman, made
1:03:47
L-shaped loser signs at a paramedic
1:03:49
witness who was testifying and turned
1:03:51
his back on the judge. After
1:03:56
a month-long trial, the jury found
1:03:58
Daniel Hossain guilty. on
1:04:00
all counts. Hossain
1:04:04
continued his disrespectful behavior during
1:04:06
his sentencing hearing. Appearing
1:04:09
via video link due to an
1:04:11
outbreak of COVID-19 on his prison
1:04:13
wing, Hossain smiled and tossed his
1:04:15
face mask into the air while
1:04:18
waiting for court proceedings to commence.
1:04:21
He also squatted on his chair
1:04:23
throughout the hearing instead of sitting
1:04:25
upright. When
1:04:27
it came time for the judge to
1:04:29
pass her sentence, Hossain turned away from
1:04:31
the camera. Undeterred,
1:04:33
the judge spoke about the horror
1:04:36
Hossain's actions had inflicted on his
1:04:38
victim's loved ones, stating,
1:04:41
I am sure that you performed these murders
1:04:44
as part of that bargain which you thought
1:04:46
would bring you wealth and power. Well,
1:04:50
the wealth and power did not arrive,
1:04:52
and nor did it happen that the police
1:04:54
never found out about your crime. Your
1:04:58
DNA was all over the crime scene. There
1:05:00
was a vast amount of CCTV to track
1:05:02
you and other evidence to prove it
1:05:04
was you. You
1:05:07
were tracked down and your plan failed.
1:05:10
Bizarre though your pact with the devil
1:05:13
may appear to others, this
1:05:15
was your belief system, your
1:05:17
own commitment to the murder of innocent
1:05:19
women. At
1:05:23
Daniel Hossain citing his autism spectrum
1:05:25
disorder as a mitigating factor, the
1:05:27
judge found that this had no
1:05:29
bearing on his decision to commit
1:05:31
his crime. She
1:05:34
sentenced Hossain to life in prison with
1:05:36
a minimum of 35 years. Because
1:05:40
he was under the age of 21, he
1:05:42
could not be given a whole life tariff.
1:05:50
Bieber and Nicole's mother, Mina
1:05:52
Smallman spoke outside court after
1:05:54
Hossain's sentencing and expressed her
1:05:56
relief at his capture. If
1:06:00
he hadn't been caught, four other
1:06:02
families may have been suffering what we
1:06:05
have." Although
1:06:07
Mina was grateful her saying had
1:06:10
been stopped, it didn't ease her
1:06:12
devastation at losing her daughters. She
1:06:15
stated, "...no
1:06:17
one expects their children to die
1:06:19
before them, but to have two
1:06:22
of your three children murdered overnight
1:06:24
is just incomprehensible." Attending
1:06:27
court has been heartbreaking. The
1:06:30
fear that both girls must have gone
1:06:32
through in their final moments, trying to
1:06:34
save each other and fighting for their
1:06:36
lives. That
1:06:39
boy, Daniel Hossain, has not only shown
1:06:41
that he has no respect for the
1:06:43
court, but that he has no
1:06:45
remorse for what he has done or
1:06:48
the pain he has caused. For
1:06:52
those who loved Bieber and Nicole,
1:06:54
Hossain's senseless motive added to their
1:06:57
grief. As
1:06:59
a longtime family friend told the
1:07:01
BBC, There
1:07:03
was a moment of sheer disbelief. To
1:07:07
find out it was to do with the just
1:07:09
trying to win the lottery, it
1:07:11
was beyond tragic. It's
1:07:14
insulting. If it
1:07:16
wasn't bad enough already, such
1:07:18
a banal reason. It
1:07:21
was insulting and defensive.
1:07:25
Their grief was further compounded by the feeling
1:07:28
that they had been let down by the
1:07:30
authorities as well. Although
1:07:33
Mina Smallman had nothing but praise
1:07:35
for the detectives who solved her
1:07:37
daughter's case, she was devastated by
1:07:39
the initial delay by police in
1:07:41
taking their disappearances seriously, and
1:07:44
the actions of the Met officers who
1:07:46
took and shared photos of their bodies.
1:07:50
The fact that so many officers
1:07:52
also received these images in group
1:07:54
chats and failed to raise the
1:07:56
alarm was just as distressing. At
1:08:03
around 9pm on Wednesday, March 3, 2021, a 33-year-old woman
1:08:06
named Sarah Everard left a
1:08:11
friend's house near Clapham Common in south
1:08:14
London and began walking to her home
1:08:16
in Brixton Hill. When
1:08:19
she failed to meet her boyfriend as
1:08:21
planned the following day, he reported her
1:08:23
missing and a search was quickly launched.
1:08:27
CCTV footage would reveal that Sarah
1:08:30
had walked for about half an
1:08:32
hour before being stopped by an
1:08:34
off-duty Met police officer named Wayne
1:08:36
Cousins, who was driving a rented
1:08:38
car. He
1:08:40
flashed his police badge at Sarah
1:08:43
and falsely arrested her for breaching
1:08:45
COVID-19 guidelines by being out without
1:08:47
permission. An
1:08:49
investigation would reveal Cousins had strangled Sarah,
1:08:51
then disposed of her remains in a
1:08:54
pond on a property he owned. He
1:08:57
had been plotting to kidnap and kill a
1:09:00
woman for some time, and
1:09:02
Sarah had been his randomly selected
1:09:04
victim. Sarah
1:09:07
Everard's murder led to a
1:09:09
widespread backlash across London. For
1:09:13
many people, her death was an
1:09:15
example of another pandemic gripping the
1:09:17
United Kingdom, male violence
1:09:19
against women. Vigilance
1:09:22
were held in memory of Sarah and
1:09:24
to protest the fact that she had
1:09:26
been killed while just going about her
1:09:28
life as she had every right to
1:09:30
do. But
1:09:32
the Met police broke up these vigils and
1:09:35
made a number of violent arrests in the
1:09:37
process. They said
1:09:39
this was because attendees were in breach
1:09:41
of COVID restrictions. To
1:09:45
many Londoners, the Met police's
1:09:47
actions were unacceptable. One
1:09:49
of their own had been responsible for murdering
1:09:51
a young woman, and it appeared
1:09:54
that those protesting his crime were experiencing
1:09:56
harsher penalties than the perpetrator had in
1:09:58
the past for her. prior offences.
1:10:03
News broke that Wayne Cousins had a
1:10:05
history of committing sexual assault. He
1:10:07
had been accused of indecent exposure
1:10:09
on three separate occasions. Each
1:10:12
time police had either failed to
1:10:14
investigate or take action against him.
1:10:17
One woman said when she had tried to
1:10:20
report Cousins, the police had lasted her. In
1:10:24
2018, Cousins sexually assaulted a drag queen
1:10:26
at a pub. Five
1:10:30
officers came under scrutiny for
1:10:32
having shared grossly offensive material
1:10:34
with Cousins prior to Sarah
1:10:36
Everard's murder. One
1:10:39
officer involved in the initial search for
1:10:41
Sarah shared an offensive meme about her
1:10:43
case on social media. Several
1:10:47
med officers opted to give Cousins
1:10:49
positive character references during his sentencing
1:10:51
for the murder and female
1:10:53
officers came forward to say they
1:10:55
felt unable to report inappropriate conduct
1:10:57
by male colleagues. Public
1:11:01
trust in the Metropolitan Police was at
1:11:03
an all-time low. For
1:11:06
Mina Smallman, it all felt
1:11:08
sickeningly familiar. She
1:11:11
felt a tremendous amount of grief
1:11:13
for Sarah Everard's family. In
1:11:15
an interview with the BBC, Mina
1:11:18
stated, I
1:11:20
know what that family, the parents, will
1:11:22
be going through, and
1:11:24
it is a hell. You
1:11:27
can't begin to understand what it is
1:11:29
to lose a child under those circumstances,
1:11:32
and then to have a further betrayal
1:11:34
by the very organisation who is paid
1:11:36
and we have an agreement with that
1:11:39
they will protect us, they
1:11:41
will honour us and behave in
1:11:43
a way that gives our deceased dignity.
1:11:47
At the same time, Mina couldn't help
1:11:50
but notice the stark difference between the
1:11:52
amount of attention and public outrage Sarah's
1:11:54
case had received in comparison to her
1:11:57
daughter's. Sarah's
1:12:00
disappearance seriously from the start,
1:12:03
Bieber and Nicole's loved ones had to
1:12:05
organize their own search parties. This
1:12:08
led to the extremely traumatic result
1:12:10
of Nicole's boyfriend Adam being the
1:12:12
one to discover their bodies. There
1:12:16
was wall-to-wall coverage of Sarah Everard's
1:12:18
case, in stark contrast to the
1:12:20
amount of attention Bieber and Nicole
1:12:22
received. Women's
1:12:24
magazine Gratia reflected on the discrepancy
1:12:27
between the two cases in an
1:12:29
article headlined, Where is
1:12:31
the outrage for Nicole Smallman and Bieber
1:12:34
Henry? Mina
1:12:36
told the BBC, I
1:12:39
think the notion of all people
1:12:41
matter is absolutely right, but it's
1:12:43
not true. Other
1:12:45
people have more kudos in this world
1:12:48
than people of colour. That's
1:12:50
what gives me purpose. If
1:12:53
their lives make a change in the
1:12:55
way women are viewed, and black women
1:12:57
in particular. Because
1:12:59
in the pecking order of things, we
1:13:02
are the lowest on the ladder. The
1:13:09
Metropolitan Police issued a statement in response
1:13:11
to the public anger against them. It
1:13:15
read in part, The
1:13:17
murder of Sarah Everard is the most
1:13:20
horrific of crimes, but we recognize this
1:13:22
is part of a much bigger and
1:13:24
troubling picture. There have
1:13:26
been other murders of women in public
1:13:29
spaces, including the killings of Nicole Smallman
1:13:31
and Bieber Henry. All
1:13:34
of these bring into sharp focus our
1:13:36
urgent duty to do more to protect
1:13:38
women and girls. They
1:13:41
reported that there would be a
1:13:44
review of Met Police culture and
1:13:46
standards, with an urgent review of
1:13:48
all current investigations into allegations of
1:13:51
sexual misconduct and domestic abuse against
1:13:53
Met officers. They
1:13:56
also published a new action plan for
1:13:58
tackling violence against girls. girls and women.
1:14:03
Jamie Lewis and Dennis Jaffa, the
1:14:05
two officers who had photographed Bieber
1:14:07
and Nicole's bodies, both pleaded guilty
1:14:10
to misconduct in public office. Lewis
1:14:13
was instantly dismissed from the force,
1:14:15
while Jaffa had already resigned by
1:14:18
the time he faced court. In
1:14:21
December 2021, both
1:14:24
men were sentenced to two years and
1:14:26
nine months in jail. They
1:14:29
would later unsuccessfully appeal this
1:14:31
sentence. The
1:14:34
Metropolitan Police's then-assistant commissioner Helen
1:14:36
Ball said that the men's
1:14:38
colleagues were appalled by their
1:14:40
actions and that the public
1:14:42
couldn't have confidence in their
1:14:44
organization if the force didn't
1:14:46
take their behavior seriously. Quote,
1:14:50
I'm sorry that our officers behaved
1:14:52
in such a hurtful, disrespectful and
1:14:54
criminal way. Their
1:14:56
actions are shameful. Three
1:15:00
other officers who had received the
1:15:02
images without challenging or reporting them
1:15:04
all received written warnings but were
1:15:06
permitted to keep their jobs. The
1:15:11
Independent Office for Police Conduct, or
1:15:13
IOPC, held a separate inquiry into
1:15:15
how the police handled initial reports
1:15:18
that Bieber Henry and Nicole Smallman
1:15:20
were missing. They
1:15:22
found that the Metropolitan Police had
1:15:24
failed to follow their missing person's
1:15:26
policies and made other errors. When
1:15:30
a friend of one of the sisters
1:15:32
called the police asking for help, the
1:15:34
call handler was dismissive and referred to
1:15:36
one of the missing women as a
1:15:38
suspect. Information from
1:15:41
a family member as to where
1:15:43
the sisters might be was inaccurately
1:15:45
recorded and led to an inspector
1:15:47
cancelling the report. The
1:15:49
IOPC found that the Met Police's response
1:15:52
to the case was below the standard
1:15:54
that it should have been. However,
1:15:56
they didn't find that this was due
1:15:58
to any racial bias. against the women.
1:16:03
The Met offered an official
1:16:05
apology to the women's families,
1:16:07
with then-commissioner Dame Cressida Dick
1:16:09
stating, While
1:16:11
we know that very sadly Nicole
1:16:13
and Bieber had been murdered in
1:16:15
the early hours of Saturday June
1:16:17
6, 2020, before they were
1:16:20
reported missing, if we had
1:16:22
responded better we may have saved their
1:16:24
friends and family in measurable pain. I
1:16:28
am very sorry that the level of
1:16:30
service we provided fell short. Mina
1:16:34
Smallman responded, quote, Sorry
1:16:38
is something you say when you comprehend
1:16:40
the wrong you do and take full
1:16:42
responsibility for it. Demonstrating
1:16:45
that by taking appropriate proportionate action
1:16:47
which to our minds is not
1:16:50
going to happen. The
1:16:53
investigation was not handled appropriately.
1:16:56
The apology should have been done face
1:16:58
to face and not nearly 10 months
1:17:01
later. Mina
1:17:03
rejects the finding that there was
1:17:05
no racial bias behind the Met's
1:17:07
mishandling. Bieber
1:17:13
Henry and Nicole Smallman's loved ones
1:17:16
suffered irreparable damage as a result
1:17:18
of their murders. Mina
1:17:20
Smallman's sister, the women's aunt, had
1:17:23
cancer and suffered a rapid decline
1:17:25
after losing her nieces. After
1:17:29
she died, Mina said, You
1:17:32
can't exclude that a broken heart doesn't
1:17:34
help a person who is terminally ill.
1:17:38
The women's sister, Manique, went from being
1:17:40
one of three siblings to an only
1:17:43
child. Bieber's
1:17:46
only daughter gave birth to her
1:17:48
first child, a boy, after her
1:17:50
mother's murder. Those
1:17:53
who knew Bieber said that her death was
1:17:55
a loss to the entire community. She
1:17:58
had been a fierce advocate for the vulnerable. Members
1:18:00
of society if he came into her care
1:18:02

1:18:04

1:18:29
was barely five foot tall, she had
1:18:31

1:18:33

1:18:36
shame. A reference to an
1:18:38
annual Lots Festival in Blackpool, England.
1:18:42
When. Baber was described as a beacon.
1:18:44
A friend of Nicole said she had

1:19:07
His Victim Impact statement in
1:19:09
Cord Nicole's partner Adam spoke as
1:19:12
he's devastation at losing her.
1:19:15
To. Put into words how I
1:19:18

1:19:20

1:19:48
A small man told the guardian. I
1:19:51
